The Bay Ridge Prep Tigers strengthened and grew during the winter season and even brought home another championship. Beginning in November 2019 and ending in February 2020, six teams filled with dozens of student-athletes represented the school in competition throughout New York City. Here are highlights from the Winter 2019-2020 season:
Middle School Girls Basketball
The Middle School Girls Basketball Tigers had another victorious season. Their dedication and teamwork drove them to an undefeated 9-0 record and their second championship title in the Independent School Athletic League (ISAL). In addition to the championship win, the team has grown tremendously. Their warrior defense has stopped any offense they face. Their skills on the court, however, are nothing compared to the outstanding spirit and sportsmanship that guided them through this championship season which earned them a second banner in the school gym.
Middle School Boys Basketball
The Middle School Boys Basketball Tigers team grew as the season progressed. The Tigers were competitive and good examples of sportsmanship in each of their games. In a recent win against York Prep, they made a concerted effort to get each player to score. They nearly succeeded by getting eight out of ten players to sink at least one basket. The boys have also been excellent ambassadors for Bay Ridge Prep as they traveled to other teams in the league.
Boys Junior Varsity Basketball
This season was amazing for the JV Boys Basketball team. The Tigers had an impressive 66-56 win over York Prep in front of a passionate home crowd. The addition of Mr. Tim Raphael to the coaching staff has led to the boys really starting to click. With the help of his teammates, Henry Stewart '23 led the offensive charge for the Tigers while the entire team hustled on defense. As a team boasting just one sophomore and 12 freshmen student-athletes, the JV squad has done a remarkable job in sustaining the pace and physicality of basketball in a competitive high school league. All 13 student-athletes have contributed to the team's great vibes while team manager, Jackson Goldstein '22, has kept stats to provide valuable feedback to players and coaches.
Girls Varsity Basketball
Varsity Girls Basketball had a strong showing in the ISAL this year. The team has come together, grown and prospered in each and every game. They made tremendous strides throughout their season by developing their dribbling, shooting, defensive skill sets, teamwork and drive. A foundation has been set for success in future seasons.
Varsity Boys Basketball
Boys Varsity Basketball ended their season with seven seniors saying farewell to Tigers Basketball. After a season filled with a strong defensive presence and an amazing passing game, the Varsity Boys squad held a senior night game to honor soon-to-be grads Joshua Jeremie, David LeGrand, Moses Millman, Oscar Monteleone, Marcell Saucedo-Elcock, Junyi Yu and Yuzhen Zhao.
Varsity Track ended the winter season on a high note. The Tigers had three members come in first place in their respective heats: Sol Mandalaoui '21 won the 55 meter dash in 8.79 seconds; Samuel Toussie '22 won the 600 meter dash in 1:51; and Matthew Marcus '21 won the 300 meter dash in 46.53 seconds. Gregory Kuznetsov '21 also broke his 1600 meter (1 mile) personal record with an impressive time of 5:11.
