Middle School Student Named Thespian Society State Officer

Parlaying her passion for theater into meaningful work, Ryann Parcell started her last year of middle school as the first Junior Thespian to hold a state officer position with the Educational Theatre Association’s Thespian Society.

Last spring, all New York troupe directors were asked to put forth nominees for state officers. Although Ryann wasn’t yet in high school, Lower & Middle School Arts Coordinator Patti Veconi nominated her anyway. After meeting with the New York Chapter Director, Ryann was encouraged to apply and was then accepted over the summer.

As a newly appointed Thespian Society officer, Ryann’s primary role is chairing the committee responsible for determining the awards and award categories for this year’s Junior Thespian events at the annual New York State Thespian Festival. The state chapter director says Ryann will also fulfill the unique role as the face of Junior Thespians. She is responsible for reaching out to New York’s other young thespian troupes to encourage participation in the annual state festival and other theater events.

Since taking on the position, Ryann has learned that New York lags most states in active participation with the International Thespian Society due to the many opportunities that already locally available. She is hoping to change that and has already started promoting the benefits of getting involved with the society.

“There are lots of great resources, learning opportunities and especially scholarships that aren’t being used,” she said.

In addition to her new position with the state chapter of the International Thespian Society, Ryann is also the co-president of Bay Ridge Prep’s Junior Thespian Troupe.

Founded in 1998, Bay Ridge Prep is an independent, K-12 college preparatory school offering exceptional courses and intimate class sizes in a socially-mature and positive environment.
