The smell of freshly baked bread once again filled the hallways of the 81st Street Building as the school’s youngest students opened a pop-up bakery, their first ever business! The bakery - which students chose to name this year “The Kindergarten Fun and Happy Bakery” - is an annual staple that feeds the mind of young entrepreneurs while filling the stomachs of parents, teachers and students.
After spending weeks studying the art of making bread, testing several recipes and discussing what would be needed to open the bakery, the class wrote a proposal to Head of School Dr. Charles Fasano to ask for a $100 loan to purchase supplies for their venture.
After selling an assortments of treats - this year featured Hawaiian Bread, Irish Soda Bread, Focaccia, Chocolate Chip Cookies, Brownies, Lemon Poppyseed Muffins and Corn Muffins - for 50 cents a piece to visitors, the students were able to not only return the $100 to Dr. Fasano but were also left with a profit of over $550!
The next big decision was what to do with the bakery profits. The class decided to have a Pizza, Pasta, and Ice Cream Party to celebrate all of their hard work and then to donate the rest. After asking the Kindergarten families to suggest charities that are near and dear to their hearts, the children voted and decided to donate the rest of the profits to Operation CR. This is a charity that supports children in need with food, clothing and toys.
