Science Students Present Independent Research Proposals
Posted 02/12/2019 01:59PM

The Upper School’s Science Research and Design course continues to generate outstanding research proposals from students. In the course's latest event, two students presented their projects before an institutional review board for approval to proceed with their research.

One research topic, by Layla Bonilla ‘20, focuses on whether or not there there is an increased incidence of anxiety and depression in heart transplant patients. The second research topic, by Moses Millman ‘20, is a deep-dive into artificial photosynthesis and a path toward alternative energy. Each student had ten minutes to present their work and then answer questions from the review board.

The Science Research and Design course is an application-only course created five years ago by Science Department Chair Dr. Lisa Neesemann and Math Department Chair Ms. Natasha Hazell. The course is a three year sequence beginning in sophomore year where students are introduced to the field of science research. The sophomore year component teaches students how to read journal articles and generate testable questions. They then select research topics of personal interest to them and perform literature reviews from peer reviewed sources. They present their research at a symposium in the spring. As juniors, students create proposals for research projects following their interests from the previous year. These projects are conducted during the spring of junior year and into senior year and require approval from an institutional review board.
