Upper School students in front of the 74th Street Building during the National School Walkout.
Bay Ridge Prep Middle and Upper School students participated in the March 14 National School Walkout to honor the victims of the school shooting in Parkland, Florida. At 10 a.m., students and staff walked out of the 74th Street and 81st Street Buildings to honor the 17 lives lost in Parkland, the many other lives lost to shootings and to advocate for legislation that would help stem the tide of senseless gun violence in the United States.
After weeks of planning, students in both divisions produced moving and meaningful ceremonies. The names of each of the 17 victims were read aloud, a moment of silence was observed, students held signs advocating for change and spoke about the effects of gun violence and the need for more attention to mental illness. Students, accompanied by school faculty and staff, then marched to nearby avenues while distributing literature containing facts and statistics about gun violence.
Below is video and photos from the ceremonies.
