Last spring, Middle School teacher Ms. Diana Monaco saw a video of Teddy Droseros visiting a high school in Manhattan. Droseros, the founder of Grateful Peoples, is on a mission to "create real happiness" by sharing his "passion for power of gratitude." After Ms. Monaco contacted him to learn more, Droseros came to Bay Ridge Prep and met with the Middle School faculty to discuss small steps students can take each day to fill their lives and their community with more gratitude.
One outcome of Ms. Monaco linking Bay Ridge Prep and Grateful Peoples is time being set aside each day for students to jot down a few sentences in "gratitude journals". In these small notebooks, students write down three things they are grateful for that day. Once a week, during lunch, an open share opportunity occurs where students can choose to share their thoughts with their peers.
The concept of a gratitude journal is spreading. In the 81st Street Main Office, a community gratitude journal is now available for any student, staff member or visitor leave a note in and share what they are grateful for.
Beside the journal is a note card from Droseros, the Grateful People founder.
"This journal was created to change the way we think about health and happiness," it reads. "Take a deep breath, write down something you are grateful for, and watch how the power of gratitude can transform your day and your life."
Founded in 1998, Bay Ridge Prep is an independent, K-12 college preparatory school offering exceptional courses and intimate class sizes in a socially-mature and positive environment.
