Middle School families enjoyed an evening of arts on March 2 as the second annual Winter Arts Showcase featured the music, drama and studio artwork of Bay Ridge Prep sixth, seventh and eighth graders.

Beginning with a band concert, families were treated first to music that was thematically adventurous and technically challenging. Several months of hard work culminated in a performance experience that demonstrated a keen understanding of ensemble musicianship. Technical skills were on display through the "Star-Spangled Banner" and the band energized the audience with performances of “Avenger” and “Clash of Warriors”. After this excellent concert, students are looking forward to their June show, “BRP Goes to the Movies” where they will perform selections of several popular motion picture scores.

Throughout the evening, artwork created and curated by seventh grade studio art students was on display. A variety of themes, mediums, and projects were shown with the artists present, excited to explain their ideas and processes. Throughout the semester, students designed and guided their work to build their portfolio.

For the theater section of the showcase, the seventh grade first shared an original ensemble performance devised from their work on acting techniques using big emotion. The cast pushed the boundaries of natural realism with bold choices in dramatic expression, creating characters that were dynamic and interesting.

Concluding the evening, the eighth grade theater company performed three short plays that they also presented in repertory during the school days leading up to the showcase. After learning about the various jobs necessary in running a theater company, the class articulated a set of standards for production and set about casting, directing, designing and rehearsing a repertory season of short plays around the theme of misunderstanding and how information is shared between adolescents.
