Lower School Assistant Teacher (Kindergarten)

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Work with the teacher to facilitate activities for all children both indoors and outdoors;

  • Exhibits a genuine nurturing, caring attitude to all children.

  • Maintains a positive, calm attitude and a soft voice

  • Maintains a cooperative attitude of working together with the teacher, volunteers, parents, and program specialists in planning and implementing activities.

  • Assists teacher to implement the developmental assessment for each child to determine the child’s strengths and areas in which each child may need help.

  • Becomes familiar with the teacher’s written lesson plans, the daily schedule, methods for recording attendance, and all other daily duties of the teacher.

  • Assists the teacher in safeguarding all classroom supplies and equipment.

Qualifications:

  • B.A. or B.S. from an accredited college or university required

  • Excellent rapport with children

  • Strong work ethic

  • 2 years teaching experience in elementary education in public and/or independent schools

Instrumental Music Teacher

About the position:
Bay Ridge Prep seeks a full-time Instrumental Music Teacher to join its Upper School arts department for the 2019-2020 academic year. The ideal candidate is capable of building an instrumental music program, teaching one-on-one music lessons, and serving as music director for school productions. The candidate should be prepared to demonstrate playing proficiency on their major instrument, as well as secondary instruments. Potential for teaching general music, music theory, or music history is also a possibility for this position.

Essential duties include:

  • Building a cohesive, 9th-12th grade instrumental music program (including band and chorus).

  • Teaching one-on-one music lessons across a wide range of musical instruments (including piano, woodwinds, percussion, and voice).

  • Serving as music director for major school concerts and performances, including a holiday Winters Arts Festival and a spring musical.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or post-graduate work in music or music education

  • Previous experience teaching in a school or youth/student-centered environment.

  • Ability to develop a curriculum that meets or exceeds New York State and national standards for music education

  • Ability to relate and interact well with students, faculty and parent community

  • Empathy for supporting diverse levels learning abilities and needs

Educational Technologist

About the position:
In this new position for our school, the Educational Technologist will be responsible for:

  • Collaborating with faculty and administrators to create and implement dynamic learning environments for students
  • Instituting best practices for technology use and maintenance
  • Seeking and developing technology-related professional development programming for faculty
  • Assisting in managing the school’s technology and software.

The ideal candidate also has experience working directly with students and can easily adapt instruction to meet the needs of advanced middle and high students as well as those students with learning differences.

Duties Include:

  • Provide direct guidance and support in the use of technology for teaching faculty
  • Provide training and professional development for faculty
  • Partner with administration and faculty in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of technology in curricula, course materials and methods of instruction across disciplines
  • Provide administrative and technical support for instructional technology
  • Provide administrative setup, ongoing support, and faculty training for the school’s Learning Management Systems and related databases
  • Maintain records of progress with classroom technology efforts by departments and individual faculty
  • Supervise student spaces as assigned, instruct students individually and in group settings (to include teaching a minimum of one course per term and leading tech-related student clubs
  • Guest-teach and co-teach across disciplines
  • Assist individual faculty to establish clear learning objectives for lessons, units, and projects utilizing appropriate technology
  • Maintain contact with students and parents via effective and regular communication
  • Provide a variety of resources for students to explore, manipulate and use technology in classroom and other school environments

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or post-graduate work in educational technology
  • 2-3 years experience working in an independent school environment preferred
  • Experience in a one-to-one environment using cloud-based, office-suite software
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Demonstrated understanding of technology in curriculum design
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with diverse faculty and student populations
  • Experience in curricular design, inquiry-based learning, and classroom teaching
  • Demonstrated experience teaching computer science, robotics and/or engineering
  • Ability to relate and interact with students of various ages and faculty
  • Empathy for supporting diverse levels of technical ability and skill set

This position will support our Upper School students, parents, faculty and administrators with primary responsibility for operating the Upper School’s front office and reception area. The general hours are 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The ideal candidate is able to:

  • Speak about the school with enthusiasm and belief in its mission and philosophy

  • Handle interruptions and diversions cheerfully and respond to needs with a positive attitude

  • Relate in a loving, caring way to students who may be sick, anxious, or upset

  • Maintain the confidentiality of students’ records and information about school families, employees, and other constituents

  • Maintain a positive and professional demeanor while conducting school business

 

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Answering and managing heavy phone traffic on a daily basis

  • Welcoming visitors and notifying school staff of appointment arrivals

  • Complete daily attendance reports in school database (Veracross)

  • Update student/family information as needed in school database (Veracross)

  • Print and create various data reports using school database (Veracross)

  • Order office supplies for administrative offices

  • Assist directors and faculty with various administrative tasks

  • Assist with special events

  • Other tasks as assigned by the Head of School and other administrators

 

Basic qualifications:

  • Previous experience in a school setting strongly preferred

  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Google Apps/Google Drive Suite, and school database systems

  • Strong computer and internet skills; ability to learn and navigate new software

  • Excellent and efficient oral, written, and electronic communication skills

  • Ability to multitask and be flexible to change

Learning Specialist - Upper School

About the position:

For our Upper School Bridge Program and Achieve Program, Bay Ridge Prep seeks an experienced educator to work as a learning specialist for students with learning difficulties who are preparing for college. The students’ learning needs may include language processing difficulties, specific learning disabilities, executive function deficits, or other specific cognitive issues that can impact learning.

Specific activities of this position will include:

  • Teach small groups of students both basic and more advanced reading and writing skills.

  • Support classroom instruction in small group and individual contact by helping students complete papers and projects and prepare for exams.

  • Provide direct instruction to improve executive function skills in small groups in a mentoring class.

  • Provide students with accommodations (e.g., reader, scribe, extra time, etc.) as stipulated in their IEP or Section 504 Plan.

  • Help teach cognitive strategies and coordinate with other teachers to help these skills generalize to the classroom.

  • Engage in individual sessions with select students as needed.

  • Work with Bridge Program and Achieve Program staff to create appropriate goals based on each student’s unique reading and writing strengths and needs.

  • Assess the effectiveness of the interventions through regular progress monitoring.

  • Participate in meetings regarding students in the Achieve Program and Bridge Program as well as faculty meetings.

  • Serve as a mentor to select students in the program.

 
Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Education - focus in special education preferred.

  • Valid NYS certification in Special Education (Grades 7-12) or related field, or be eligible for such certification.

  • Understanding of the needs of students with learning disabilities.

  • Able to develop a good rapport with students with learning challenges.

  • Classroom teaching experience that includes work with students with learning difficulties.

  • Training in and experience with research-based strategies and interventions for reading and writing skills.  Preference for someone knowledgeable in one or more of the following reading interventions: Wilson, Orton-Gillingham, PAF.

  • Be experienced with classroom management techniques.

  • Knowledge of and experience with cognitive strategy instruction a plus.

Bay Ridge Prep Athletics seeks talented and organized individuals to serve as coaches and assistant coaches during the 2018-2019 school year. The following opportunities are available:

  • Varsity Boys Basketball; Assistant Coach (November - February)

  • Varsity Boys Baseball; Head Coach (March - May)

  • Varsity Boys Baseball; Assistant Coach Coach (March - May)

In general, coaches must be available 4 - 5 days during the school week, between the hours of 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., to run practices, coach games and travel to/from games with students. Some games will require work beyond 6 p.m. due to travel.

  • Previous coaching experience, preferably in an independent or private school setting

  • CPR, First Aid, AED and Concussion Management certified

  • Ability to maintain a positive environment for students and other community members
