Special Education Teacher (Middle School)

About the position:
As a special education teacher/learning specialist you will support the mission of the school by interacting within the school community to ensure the safety and well-being of the students in advisory and content area classes.  You will oversee and create enriching educational experiences and look for opportunities to further the development of social and emotional skills through the development of a challenging and developmentally supportive curriculum to educate both mainstream students as well as students with learning differences.  You will integrate your knowledge of middle school development, appropriate learning standards, and emotional intelligence in your work with students and their families, colleagues, and other professionals with the goal of bringing your best self to work and inspiring that in others.


Duties and responsibilities include:  

Students

Teaching responsibilities may vary depending on the needs of specific students or a division.

  • Work in collaboration with the Middle School Director and relevant academic departments to develop content-specific curriculum that meets the needs of our students.

  • Differentiate teaching methods for students and utilize varied materials to meet the needs of the students.

  • Be responsive to individual student needs when teaching and developing lessons and give thought to the organizational needs of the students.

  • Provide appropriate assignments and prompt feedback on classwork and homework.

  • Run an Advisory which aims to assist students in developing good overall organizational habits and build community through the relationships that a small group can provide. Serve as the point person for students in advisory in terms of their relationships with other faculty members, communicating with families as needed to help maintain a student’s general progress and success throughout the year. In this role, communicate when needed regarding student schedules, general rules, and procedures.

  • Supervise students during varying times, as deemed appropriate depending on the load of the specific teacher: Advisory, Lunch Duty, Choice Time, Town Hall, Park, Club Time, Overnight Trips, and Dismissal supervision.

  • Order teaching supplies, as necessary, to fulfill the planned lessons for the academic year.

  • Notify facilities of room repairs needed or furniture requests for the classroom.

  • Structure the room so that others using the space can locate materials and feel comfortable sharing the space.

  • Straighten up the classroom at the end of the teaching day so that the cleaning team can easily clean.

  • Participate in preparation for CSE reviews and meetings, as needed.

  • Participate in preparation for an impartial hearing as needed.

  • Collaborate with other teachers, the content-area department, the grade level coordinators, members of the counseling team, the Division Director and Head of School to meet the needs of students.

  • Work with other teachers and administrators in the development, evaluation, and revision of school programs.


Faculty

  • Meet regularly with supervisor to discuss the curriculum and reflect on students’ progress.

  • Attend weekly department meetings and division meetings.

  • Participate in faculty and staff development days.


Communication

  • Our expectation is that all communication within the school community is thoughtful and polite, with the intention of continuing to build connection.

  • Write, edit, and submit semester and quarterly report cards and comments

  • Communicate with parents and guardians to discuss students’ needs and progress. This may occur face-to-face in meetings, or via email, written notes, or phone calls.

  • Communicate with outside therapists, tutors, and other professionals working with our students.

  • Complete and submit recommendations, evaluations, and other requests for information about students.

  • Work to ensure clear communication with families, psychologists, therapists, and other outside providers. Seek support when necessary.

  • Plan for and participate in parent-teacher conferences.

  • Act with integrity and address all conflicts in a professional manner.


Other

  • A sense of fun, adventure, and humor is a plus.

  • Teachers are required to familiarize themselves with our faculty handbook and employment manuals and meet the expectations outlined within each.


Additional information outlining specific job requirements related to specific student needs, curriculum, division specific duties, and schedules will be made available during meetings with the Division Director or the Head of School.


Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.


Work environment and Physical Demands
This job requires the ability to maintain the physical capacity required to navigate the school environment and to ensure the safety of the students.  The ability to open filing cabinets and bend or stand for long periods of time, as necessary. Classroom locations vary based on student schedules and staff may need to teach from different rooms.  This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a ten-month full-time position that follows the academic calendar.  Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8 am to 3 pm; faculty meetings occur on Tuesdays from 2:45 pm to 4 pm. Evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand and will be scheduled in advance.


Travel
Travel between school buildings is necessary on occasion, scheduled with advanced notice, and are within walking distance from each other.  We also travel to the park on Fridays when the weather is appropriate; this is within walking distance.


Requirements
Master Degree in Special Education and/or a content area specialization required, or, Master Degree in Education. Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with all levels of employees, management, and external agencies to maximize performance, problem-solving and achieve results.  Willingness to learn and adapt to a new environment. Proficiency with Google Apps / G Suite applications preferred. Experience in the special education, private sector, or Independent School system a plus.

This position will support our Upper School students, parents, faculty and administrators with primary responsibility for operating the Upper School’s front office and reception area. The general hours are 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Basic qualifications:

The ideal candidate is capable of building an instrumental music program, teaching one-on-one music lessons, and serving as music director for school productions. The candidate should be prepared to demonstrate playing proficiency on their major instrument, as well as secondary instruments. Potential for teaching general music, music theory, or music history is also a possibility for this position.

Essential duties include:

  • Building a cohesive, 9th-12th grade instrumental music program (including band and chorus).

  • Teaching one-on-one music lessons across a wide range of musical instruments (including piano, woodwinds, percussion, and voice).

  • Serving as music director for major school concerts and performances, including a holiday Winters Arts Festival and a spring musical.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or post-graduate work in music or music education

About the positions:
Bay Ridge Prep Athletics seeks talented and organized individuals to serve as coaches and assistant coaches during the 2018-2019 school year. The following opportunities are available:

  • Varsity Boys Basketball; Assistant Coach (November - February)

  • Varsity Boys Baseball; Head Coach (March - May)

  • Varsity Boys Baseball; Assistant Coach Coach (March - May)

In general, coaches must be available 4 - 5 days during the school week, between the hours of 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., to run practices, coach games and travel to/from games with students. Some games will require work beyond 6 p.m. due to travel.

  • Previous coaching experience, preferably in an independent or private school setting

  • CPR, First Aid, AED and Concussion Management certified

  • Ability to maintain a positive environment for students and other community members
