I laughed! I cried! It was better than 'Cats'!!

Audiences are still talking about the premier performance of "The Pirates of Atlantis", an 81st Street Little Black Box original production featuring the delightfully expressive and talented fifth grade class.

While the play was written and directed by Lower & Middle School Arts Coordinator Patti Veconi, this particular class and the unique personalities that comprise it were the inspiration for the script. Plans for "The Pirates of Atlantis" began last spring during a brainstorming session with the cast of the then-fourth graders. Among the initial ideas were a Greek myth, something about pirates, perhaps some mermaids, and if possible, "could we have a maelstrom?" (The students had been very impressed with the stage effects of a maelstrom in the production of "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" they saw at The New Victory Theatre last year.)

It takes a team to produce a show like this and the behind-the-scenes team included Scott Tofte as co-director and lighting designer, Robin Reczek and Marjorie Vera on set design and construction, and the very special guest talents of parent and fashion designer Rebecca Taylor creating stunning costumes.

Founded in 1998, Bay Ridge Prep is an independent, K-12 college preparatory school offering exceptional courses and intimate class sizes in a socially-mature and positive environment.
