Students Learn from Pros on Career Day

Over 20 professionals volunteered their time on Friday, March 17, to visit Bay Ridge Prep for Upper School Career Day. Organized by the Guidance Department, the morning of special classes allowed students to hear from a variety of speakers in fields such as architecture, athletic training, education, law medicine and psychology.

The sessions and special guests included:

Architecture:

Morgan Reynolds, AIA received his Masters in Architecture in 2010 from Columbia University Graduate School for Architecture, Planning and Preservation. He attended Vassar College for his Bachelors of Arts. Morgan has worked as a designer with Arup International Consultants in Shanghai as part of the architectural, facades, and structural engineering disciplines. He is presently working as a technical architect with Heintges and Associates in New York, where he works on a broad range of commercial and institutional projects.

Athletic Training:
Mike Cunningham received his Master’s Degree from Seton Hall University in 2015. During his time there, he worked with Seton Hall Athletics, Rutgers Football, and a number of high schools in New Jersey. Mike is currently working as an athletic trainer at One-on-One Physical Therapy, in Brooklyn, NY. In addition, Mike is also a part-time athletic trainer for Xaverian High School Football and the strength coach for Fontbonne Hall Academy Basketball.

Branding - Web and Graphic Design:
Jacqueline Wadsworth is the owner of ImageSwim, a company that develops branding for small businesses and creates websites, content and graphic design. Prior to ImageSwim, Jacqueline worked at advertising agencies, magazines and non-profit organizations in NYC. She was also an in-house illustrator for the NYC Department of Education.

Business/Marketing:
TJ Barry is a graduate of Princeton University, and received a certificate in Sports Business from NYU, with an expertise in marketing, sports media, and sales. He is presently the Sales Manager for the NY Mets Radio Network, having worked in sales for the NY Yankees Radio Network for five years previously. TJ was initially a sales account executive, but is now the manager of the sales team, overseeing a staff of eight. He works closely with his team to monetize on-air features and promotions.

Business/Music-Theater:
Erin Winebark graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a BS in Music Education, attended the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in NYC, and received a Professional Performer’s Certificate in Studio Acting. Erin worked as an actress in film, TV, and theater before turning to playwriting, directing and producing off-Broadway. She continues to work as a voiceover actress, most recently voicing roles in Wadjet Eye Games’ Blackwell Epiphany and Fury Games’ Kathy Rain. Additionally, she has worked as the Voice Admissions Counselor at Manhattan School of Music and in the music business at RZO. While at RZO, she assisted the partner, licensed songs for film and TV, handled finances and helped to manage the day-to-day lives of various celebrity entertainers, musicians and bands including Shania Twain, Carson Daly, Nate Ruess (FUN.), David Byrne (Talking Heads) and Amos Lee. Currently, Erin is an Executive Assistant at Etsy.com.

Computer Engineering:
Robert Filipkowski received his Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering in 2016 from The Rochester Institute of Technology. He has worked as an Embedded Systems Engineer at the Raymond Corporation and a Software Engineer at Parson’s. He is presently an Embedded Hardware and Software Engineer for ODIC Incorporated, where he works on a variety of contracts from the private and government sectors.

Early Childhood Education:
Jeanne Ward, MS Ed, BCBA, LBA, received degrees from Long Island University – Southampton, St. John’s University, and University of Northern Texas. She worked as a classroom and home-based teacher from 1990 to 1998, at which time she opened Thursday's Child, an early intervention program servicing children under the age of 3 who are diagnosed with Autism. She is responsible for the day-to-day operations of 2 schools (one in Brooklyn, the other in Staten Island) servicing 200 children diagnosed with autism annually. She currently has over 100 employees working at the school and 150-200 independent contractors.

Environmental Science:

Adrian Sullivan, HEM, earned his B.S. in Biology from SUNY Oneonta. He began his professional career as a Field Chemist at Triumvirate Environmental, an environmental and hazardous waste management firm based in Astoria, NY. He later became Assistant Director of Environmental Health and Safety at the Mount Sinai Hospital, where he oversaw daily operations for the environmental health and safety department. Currently, he is the Hazardous Materials Manager at Weill Cornell Medicine, where he serves as the institutions subject matter expert for EPA, OSHA, and DOT regulations, and other related programs.

Law:
Helen Z. Galette, Esq., graduated from Pace University School of Law in 1995 with a Juris Doctorate degree, cum laude. She is admitted to practice law in New York State, the Supreme Court of the United States, the Eastern District of New York, and the Southern District of New York. Helen was the Principal Court Attorney to Surrogate Justice Margarita López Torres. Presently, she is a Court Attorney-Referee at Surrogate’s Court, Kings County, where she researches and prepares decisions and orders for the Surrogate. As a referee, the Surrogate may refer cases for Helen to preside over and to report on.

Jonathan Selkowe, Esq., received his J.D. in 2009 from Brooklyn Law School. He is presently an Assistant District Attorney in Queens County where he investigates and prosecutes violent felonies in the Major Crimes division, from robberies and burglaries to narcotics trafficking and homicides.

Lighting Design:
Christopher Landy is a Brooklyn-based lighting designer specializing in television and live events. Chris has a Master’s Degree in lighting and scenic design from NYU, as well as over 25 years of design experience. His extensive television credits include work for NBC, CBS, MTV, MTV2, VH1, BET, Comedy Central, HBO, Showtime, FX, PBS, Spike, Oxygen, Food Network, LOGO, AMC, FUSE, Style Network, NBATV, MSNBC, CNN, and CMT among others. Shows of note are The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, Lip Sync Battle, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, The Marriage Ref, The Job, Food Network Challenge, Inside the NFL, and countless MTV shows starting with Total Request Live with Carson Daly. Chris’ musical background has led him to light concert performances for the likes of Jay-Z, U2, REM, LL Cool J, Justin Timberlake, John Legend, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Arcade Fire, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Dave Matthews and Beck, to name a few. Chris received an Emmy award for his lighting of MTV’s Unplugged with Katy Perry. He also received an Emmy Nomination for his work on MSNBC’s coverage of the 2004 Election.

Music Composer/Business:
Sean Hickey is the Vice-President of Sales and Business Development for Naxos of America, and an award-winning composer of nearly 100 works of solo, chamber, vocal, orchestral and music for theater, with four recordings to his credit. In addition, he represents the largest classical music record label in the world, as well as the largest distributor of recorded music, handling sales, partnerships and all relationships with music sellers throughout the world.

Musician/Assistant Conductor:
Thomas Bagwell is a world-renowned pianist and assistant conductor, currently holding the position of Assistant Conductor at the Metropolitan Opera (“The Met”) and the Washington National Opera. He has performed to critical acclaim at numerous venues world-wide, including Carnegie Hall, London’s Wigmore Hall, Vienna’s Musikverein, and Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw. Mr. Bagwell has collaborated and recorded with various superstars in the operatic and classical music world, such as Renée Fleming, Scott St. John, and Midori. He is a faculty member at the Mannes College of Music, and has taught classes and master classes at a multitude of universities, including Yale, the University of Colorado, and Portland State University.

Nursing:
Maura Connolly, MA, RN, has over 40 years’ experience as a nurse and nursing supervisor/manager in a wide variety of settings, including Mount Sinai, Beth Israel, The New York Hospital and Calvary Hospital. She is currently the Nurse Manager at NYU Lutheran Medical Center, responsible for the management of a 24 bed Medical/Surgical unit, training and supervision of personnel, and a member of multiple departmental and hospital committees.

Pharmacy:

Dr. Bishoy Luka completed a Doctor of Pharmacy Degree at Long Island University, his post graduate training at SUNY Upstate University Hospital in Toxicology, and earned a Master's Certificate in Health Information Technology from Columbia University. He is presently the Senior Director of Pharmacy Services at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, NY. In his current role, he oversees a Department of over 120 pharmacy staff, serves the medication needs of over 900 patients per day, and implements healthcare technology to deliver safer and more effective patient care. Dr. Luka also servers as an Adjunct Professor of Pharmacology at the SUNY Downstate College of Nursing Graduate Programs. He is currently completing an MBA in Healthcare Management at Hofstra University.

Production Design:
Ellen Waggett received her MFA in Theatrical Design from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, after graduating from Williams College. Ellen is a Production Designer working in television; she co-owns Vibrant Design, Inc., a Brooklyn-based entertainment design firm. She currently designs for Late Night with Seth Meyers. Other career highlights include designing Chopped, Stephen Colbert’s Christmas Special, Whoopi, and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

Psychologist, Author, University Professor:
Dr. John Pellitteri is a licensed psychologist and holds a Ph.D. degree in Counseling Psychology from New York University. His two masters degrees are in Psychological Counseling (from Teachers College, Columbia University) and Music Therapy (from NYU). He is a professor of Counseling and the program director at Queens College -City University of New York. He will speak about clinical careers at the masters-level (as a creative arts therapist and counselor) and about doctoral level work (as a psychologist and professor).

Veterinary:
Dr. Ali Mason is a Veterinarian in Brooklyn, NY. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Hamilton College, and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the Atlantic Veterinary College, on Prince Edward Island in Canada. After veterinary school, Dr. Mason completed a small animal rotating internship at Fifth Avenue Veterinary Specialists in Union Square (Now called Blue Pearl Veterinary Partners). She then joined the Cobble Hill Animal Clinic, and now works at Hope Animal Hospital in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn. Dr. Mason has a general interest in all facets of small animal medicine and surgery, but has a special interest in dermatology. She is also a certified veterinary medical acupuncturist. Her patients include both cats and dogs and she has two rescue dogs of her own.
