Learning Specialist (Upper School)

Start Date: August 29, 2017
Salary: Commensurate with experience

About the position:
For our Upper School Bridge Program, Bay Ridge Prep seeks an experienced educator to work as a learning specialist for students with learning difficulties who are preparing for college. The students’ learning needs may include language processing difficulties, specific learning disabilities, executive function deficits, or other specific cognitive issues that can impact learning.

Specific activities of this position will include:

  • Review relevant data and create specific goals based on each student’s unique reading and writing strengths and needs in consultation with the Bridge Program Director.

  • Teach small groups of students both basic and more advanced reading and writing skills.

  • Provide direct instruction to improve executive function skills in small groups in a mentoring class.

  • Teach specific cognitive strategies and coordinate with other teachers to help these skills generalize.

  • Engage in more intensive individual sessions with select students as needed.

  • Assess the effectiveness of the interventions through regular progress monitoring.

  • Write progress reports and participate in annual CSE reviews with the Department of Education.

  • Participate in weekly meetings regarding students in the Bridge Program as well as faculty meetings.

  • Serve as a mentor to select students in the program.


Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree

  • Valid NYS certification in Special Education (Grades 7-12) or related field, or be eligible for such certification.

  • Training in and experience with research-based strategies and interventions for reading and writing skills including, but not limited to, reading interventions such as Wilson, Orton-Gillingham or PAF, to name a few.

  • Understanding of the needs of students with learning difficulties.

  • Knowledge of and experience with cognitive strategy instruction is a plus.

  • Classroom teaching experience that includes work with students with learning difficulties.

  • Candidates should be familiar with Common Core Learning Standards

  • Solid classroom management techniques

Administrative Assistant / School Secretary

Start Date: August 1, 2017

About the position:

This position will support our Upper School and will join the existing Upper School secretary in serving the school community - including students, parents, faculty and administrators - and demonstrates the following traits:

Commitment:
  Able to speak about the school with enthusiasm and belief in its mission and philosophy

Flexibility:  
Able to handle interruptions and diversions cheerfully and willing to respond to needs with a positive attitude

Sensitivity:  Relates in a loving, caring way to students who may be sick, frightened, or upset

Professionalism:  Maintains the confidentiality of students’ records and information about school families, employees, and other constituents. Has excellent and efficient oral, written, and electronic communication skills and maintains a positive and professional demeanor while conducting school business.


Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Answering and managing heavy phone traffic on a daily basis
  • Welcoming visitors and notifying school staff of appointment arrivals
  • Complete daily attendance reports in school's Student Information System (SIS)
  • Update student/family information as needed in school's SIS
  • Print and create various data reports using school's SIS
  • Order office supplies for administrative offices
  • Assist directors and faculty with various administrative tasks
  • Assist with special events
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Head of School and other administrators

Basic qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Google Apps/Google Drive, and school database systems
  • Strong computer and internet skills; ability to learn and navigate new software
  • Ability to multitask and be flexible to change
  • Previous experience in a school setting is a plus


Hours/Benefits:

  • Some evening and weekend work required
  • Paid vacation for federal/state holidays plus 4 weeks paid vacation throughout the year.
