Brooklyn Cyclones Honor Tony Campbell

Dance Company Performs At MCU Park

The Brooklyn Cyclones honored Bay Ridge Prep Athletic Director Tony Campbell during their home game on July 9 by allowing him to throw one of the ceremonial first pitches of the evening.  Prior to the game, the Bay Ridge Prep Dance Company performed a special dance routine on the field of MCU Park.

NBA champion Tony Campbell became Director of Athletics for Bay Ridge Preparatory School in September 2007. Mr. Campbell, who has held positions on the New York Knicks, Los Angeles Lakers, Detroit Pistons, Dallas Mavericks, Minnesota Timberwolves and Cleveland Cavaliers, puts his professional athletics experience to work coaching and advising students.

In just his first year as Director of Athletics, Coach Campbell dramatically expanded the school's basketball program and led the varsity baseball team to capture the title of 2008 Division II Regular Season Champions in the Private School Athletic Association. Most recently, he coached the JV Boys Basketball team to a 2009 Championship in the PSAA and, under his leadership as Athletic Director, the 2012 PSAA JV Boys Basketball Championship came back home to Bay Ridge Prep.

A native of Teaneck, New Jersey, Campbell attended Ohio State University before entering the 1984 NBA draft. He was selected 20th overall in the draft and was the first round draft pick of the Detroit Pistons. After three seasons with the Pistons, he was signed as a free agent to the Los Angeles Lakers and played alongside the likes of Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. During the 1987-1988 season, he played an integral role in helping the Lakers become NBA champions. Campbell played for the Lakers for two seasons under the leadership of legendary NBA coach Pat Riley and was then signed as a free agent by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 1989 expansion year. In the three years he played with the Timberwolves, he set the franchise's original all-time scoring record of 4,888 points. After the Timberwolves, Campbell went on to play for the New York Knicks as well as the Cleveland Cavaliers before retiring from the NBA after the 1994-1995 season.

Developing the whole student since 1998, Bay Ridge Prep is an independent, K-12 college preparatory school offering a strong academic program in a student-centered community that values the unique talents and learning styles of each person.
