Student-Athletes Honored At Sports Dinner

Tiger Award Established; State Senate Recognizes JV Champs

Bay Ridge Prep's Junior Varsity and Varsity Tigers were honored at a special dinner and awards ceremony hosted by the school's athletics department on Thursday, May 17. Emceed by Athletic Director Tony Campbell, the evening featured recognition of all student-athletes for participation in their respective sports as well as presentations of Most Valuable Player, Most Improved Player, Leadership, Team Spirit, and Dedication awards for each team.

State Senator Martin J. Golden presents the Bay Ridge Prep Junior Varsity Basketball team with official New York State Senate Resolutions honoring them for their 2012 PSAA JV Boys Championship victory.

The awards dinner, held at Sirico's on Thirteenth Avenue, also featured the presentation of two very special awards.

The Renaissance Athlete Award, which honors a graduating student-athlete who participated in every sport available in every season during his or her high school career, was presented to Danielle Cowan '12. This is only the second time in the school's history that a graduating senior has been named a Renaissance Athlete.

The Tiger Award, which was established for the first time this year, will now be given to a graduating student to honor "positive sportsmanship, team leadership, school spirit," and, as the award says on it's inscription, "being one of the most quintessential student-athletes to grace the classrooms, courts, and fields of Bay Ridge Preparatory School."

Joseph Senisi '12, was presented with the first ever Tiger Award and named as the first member to be inducted to the Bay Ridge Prep Tiger Club. Both Senisi and Cowan will have their names inscribed on plaques honoring Bay Ridge Prep Renaissance Athletes and members of the Bay Ridge Prep Tiger Club. The plaques will be updated with additional names as future awards are given and will be displayed in the school.

The awards dinner capped off an exciting year for Bay Ridge Prep Athletics that was highlighted by the Junior Varsity Boys Basketball team bringing home the Private School Athletic Association JV Championship and the Varsity Baseball team being named Regular Season Co-Champions.

New York State Senator Martin J. Golden, who presented the JV Basketball team with official New York State Senate resolutions honoring their championship victory, told the student-athletes and their parents how proud they should be of themselves and their school.

"Over the years, Bay Ridge Prep has earned a reputation for having some of the brightest students and most supportive families in our community," Sen. Golden said, "and you should all be proud to be part of one the finest schools in New York City."

Developing the whole student since 1998, Bay Ridge Prep is an independent, K-12 college preparatory school offering a strong academic program in a student-centered community that values the unique talents and learning styles of each person.
